Botox is a brand name for Botulinum toxin type A, is a naturally derived protein which acts upon nerve endings to reduce the action of these nerves and thereby the muscles which they supply. When used cosmetically it reduces the strength of the muscles of the face that cause the lines and wrinkles that come with age. The effects of Botox are temporary and last from 3-6 months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear and will need to be re-treated. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax. On the whole it has been proved to be a very safe and effective procedure.
Facial fillers (otherwise known as dermal fillers) are injectable gels used to restore or add volume to the face. Fillers vary in density (thickness), which determines the area they can be used in and what they’re designed for, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, create symmetry, fill in lines or deep folds, or enhance a particular feature such as the lips.
Fillers can be permanent or temporary. The non-permanent range of JUVÉDERM® fillers have durable, long-lasting results (up to 24 months, depending on the particular JUVÉDERM® filler and the areas treated), but your body is able to break the filler down naturally and eventually the results will fade.
Although facial fillers can be made of different ingredients, they all aim to produce a result that is seen instantly after treatment. Facial fillers may be used as an alternative to surgery, helping you to avoid invasive and expensive procedures.
Soft Surgery treatment is a non-invasive bloodless, reliable, easy to implement and safe procedure. Due to this innovative technique it is now possible to obtain the same results as you would with traditional surgery, without the need of anaesthesia, without scarring and without unnecessary risks.
This innovative technology utilises plasma – formed through ionisation of atmospheric gasses – to stimulate instant contraction and tightening of skin fibres. This technology does not use scalpel or laser to remove excess skin. This procedure avoids many of the risks associated with traditional intervention, providing a quick and easy recovery. The treatment is performed without cutting or need of stitches.

How does Botox work?
The active component in Botox® is a naturally occurring protein produced by C/ostridium Botulinum. The product blocks the transition of chemical messages sent from the nerve to cause the muscle to contract, which normally creates these lines. Without these messages, the muscle stays in a resting state until the ‘messengers’ recover. This recovery varies but takes approximately 3-6 months on average.
Before your treatment:
Before your treatment, your practitioner should make a treatment plan with you based on your concerns and expectations. You will be informed of the indications and contra-indications to treatment and will be asked to sign a consent form which you should read thoroughly.
After treatment it is expected that you will start to notice the effects within4 or 5 days. The full result may be judged at 2-3 weeks.
You may be invited to attend a review appointment after 2-3 weeks where the success of the treatment may be assessed and adjustments to your personal treatment plan can be made, if necessary.
You will be advised to keep the target muscles active for a few hours. You should avoid extremes of heat or cold (including sunbeds / saunas), vigorous exercise, alcohol consumption and prolonged sun exposure in the first 48 hours after treatment. Lying down within 4-6 hours after treatment is not advised. You should also avoid certain over the counter medications that can increase the risk of bruising (e.g. Aspirin).
There may be only a partial reduction in movement of the muscles and this very much depends on the amount of product administered and location of product placement. Treatment with Botox® is not a ‘one size fits all treatment’ and requires a tailored approach to suit your individual requirements and desired treatment outcomes – you should discuss this with your clinician at the time of consultation.
Am I suitable for treatment?
Your practitioner will take a detailed medical history and an assessment of your needs and expectations to ensure this is an appropriate treatment for you.
Treatment may not be indicated if:
- You are under 18 or over 65.
- You are pregnant or breast feeding.
- For best results skin should be in good condition and the target lines not too furrowed. Your practitioner will assess your suitability and advise.
- You suffer with certain neurological disorders.
- You are currently taking certain medicines or have recently completed a course of Roacutane.
- You have previously experienced adverse reactions to any botulinum toxin treatment
- You are suffering from any skin infection in or near the treatment area.
- You are unwell in any way.
Caution should be taken if you are planning to attend a special event when bruising or any of the potential adverse effects discussed (should they occur) would be unacceptable to you.
Is it safe?
All treatments carry a degree of risk. Side effects include, but are not limited to;
- Swelling and redness at injection sites
- Asymmetry of expression
- Drooping of the brow, or eyelid
- Headache or a sensation of ‘tightness’ or ‘heaviness’
Adverse events are uncommon and usually temporary. Your practitioner will provide aftercare advice designed to minimise risk and promote speedy recovery.
Does it hurt?
Generally, this treatment is not painful and can be well tolerated with no anaesthetic. Ice or numbing cream can, however, be used for particularly nervous patients or upon request.
How long will it last?
Results tend to take full effect within 2 weeks after treatment and last 3-6 months. Movement will begin recovering from 8- 10 weeks and frequent treatment at intervals of less than 3 months is NOT recommended.
